Before swimming, surfing, or bringing pets into the water, check the latest beach status. San Diego Coastkeeper’s advisory page lists only beaches that are currently closed or under an active warning.

Current Important Updates

Closed to water contact:The following areas are closed because of an imminent health threat associated with sewage, chemical contamination, or cross-border flows:

  • Silver Strand: shoreline from south of Avenida Lunar to north of Carnation Avenue

  • Imperial Beach: shoreline from the south end of Seacoast Drive to north of Carnation Avenue

  • Tijuana Slough: shoreline from the U.S.–Mexico border through Border Field State Park and the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge

Bacteria advisories:Visitors should avoid water contact at:

  • Cardiff State Beach near the San Elijo Lagoon outlet

  • La Jolla Cove and Children’s Pool

  • Tourmaline Surf Park near the drain outlet

  • Parts of Coronado, including Tidelands Park, North Beach Dog Beach, the Coronado Lifeguard Tower area, and Avenida Lunar

An advisory means bacteria levels exceed California health standards. A closure indicates a more immediate threat, usually involving sewage or chemical contamination.

San Diego County also has an annual recreational mussel quarantine from May 1 through October 31, 2026. Do not collect or eat recreationally harvested mussels, because cooking does not destroy the toxin. Commercially sold mussels are not included in this warning.

For statewide information, the California State Water Resources Control Board is the best primary source for beach closures, bacteria postings, rain advisories, permanent advisories, historical records, and downloadable datasets.
